The Social Conflict Game helps students who experience frequent conflict with their peers to reduce interpersonal antagonism by teaching seven cognitive and behavioural skills:
- Circumstances as a cause of conflict
- Personal responsibility
- Perspective taking
- Incorrect beliefs about aggression
- Thinking ahead about consequences
- Problem-solving skills
- Assertion skills
Question cards include:
- “Maria tells Sharon that her hair would look better is she got it cut. Sharon angrily walks away, Maria thinks “all I was trying to do was make her hair look better. What’s the big deal?” What error did Maria make in her thinking? What could have Maria done differently?
- “Nikki’s new leather coat was stolen from her locker, and she knows she’ll be in big trouble at home. When her friend says hello after school, Nikki stares back at her and says “What do you want? Can’t you see I’m busy?” Why is Nikki acting this way? If you were Nikki’s friend what would you say? If you were Nikki, what could you say instead?
The accompanying Social Conflicts Inventory, helps to identify which cognitive skills to focus on, and in turn, which of the game’s 200+ cards to use.
